Chief Secy seeks speedy completion of Mandoli jail

Delhi Chief Secretary DM Spolia paid a visit to review the progress work at under-construction Mandoli Jail on Sunday. He said the government has planned to open jails in Baprola and Narela as well.

He asked the Public Works Department to expedite the construction work of Mandoli Jail so that it could start functioning as early as possible.

Director General (Jail) Alok Verma told Spolia that the jail would be commissioned by December this year and permission for creation of 747 posts for the prison’s administrative work had been taken up with the concerned authority.

The initiative has been taken in order to decongest the over-crowded Tihar jail. 

Tihar is the largest prison in South Asia region and has around 12,000 inmates against its capacity of 6,000 prisoners across it nine jail complexes.

The Chief Secretary, while inspecting the jail complex directed the Secretary (PWD) to speed up the construction work and ensure early completion in all respects. He advised him to take up the issues relating to various departments and agencies of the government. He said the Mandoli Jail should be commissioned as early as possible viewing the position of Central Jail, Tihar, as it is already overcrowded. 

‘The matter has been taken up with the Chairman (DSSSB) for early recruitment of 747 posts of different categories requisitioned for jail administration,’ DG (Prisons) Verma informed Spolia. The Chief Secretary was also informed that the Mandoli Jail is being constructed at a piece of land measuring to 68 acres and the building will be a state-of-art building as finalised and approved by competent authorities. He said that Mandoli Jail has provision of six separate jails in its sprawling complex. Apart from this, there will be a provision for keeping high security prisoners in Mandoli. It will have a capacity of 3,750 prisoners. 

Spolia also asked the officers to speed up the work and also announced that he will again visit to review the progress after a month.
