After coming to power for the second time, Banerjee held the first state level administrative review meeting at Town Hall and kicked off her district tours from Narayangarh, where she had attended a “facility distribution” programme the day before the administrative review meeting at Jhargram. The chief minister had promised the people of Narayangarh that she would hold her first meeting here if they helped defeat CPIM stalwart Surya Kanta Mishra. After Jhargram, she held another administrative review meeting in Howrah.
In the administrative meeting at Jhargram, Banerjee had directed the state forest department to take immediate steps to check elephant attacks in villages situated close to forest areas in the region. North Bengal has also witnessed tusker attacks. Preventing such attacks and boosting tourism in North Bengal are likely to figure in the chief minister’s discussions with district officials. Banerjee is also scheduled to visit Jaigaon, a village at Alipurduar district situated on the Indo-Bhutan border.
The second Indo-Bhutan gate is coming up at Jaigaon which will ease traffic movement in the region. The state Public Health Engineering department will set up a water treatment plant at a cost of Rs 60 crore and the Urban Development department plans to develop the region as a business hub.
Moreover, a township has also been planned on the land of a closed tea garden in the area.
On Wednesday, Chief Minister will hold an administrative review meeting of three districts – Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling– at Uttar Kanya, the state secretariat in North Bengal.
Issues related to an overall development of the area will come up in the meeting. Sources said that the focus of the meeting will be on further development of infrastructure in North Bengal. The chief minister is also expected to discuss means of reviving the closed tea gardens in North Bengal in consultation with the Centre.
The state government had taken up series of projects to bring development of North Bengal in the past five years. Many of the projects are already complete. Banerjee will take stock of ongoing projects and may order expediting the work.
