Ever thought of revisiting chemistry lessons in a bar? One interesting evening in the Capital, Cafe Ludus (in the Metropolitan Mall, Saket) made that possible.
They are called molecular drinks. The whole concept is to get in elements like dry ice, sodium chloride, calcium lactate (not half as scary as they sound) and to use their chemical and physical properties to add interesting touches to otherwise common, well known alcoholic drinks.
The bar was turned in to a lab table of sorts and extensive explanations and directions were offered as the bartenders whipped up some rather heady mixes for the audience.
Besides some signature drinks of the cafe, like Torched Rose Mary Manhattan, Smoked Whisky Sour, Healthy Honey Comb Margarita and the Gin Basil Smash there were the batch of 'deconstructed signatures'.
The Healthy Honey Comb Margarita is something we recommend.
Amongst the new drinks, the Deconstructed Pinacolada was an interesting mix of cold frothy top giving way to a warmer fresh pineapple and cane sugar after.
The Espresso Nutty Martini whcih is Vanilla vodka shaken with Kahlua and an espresso shot piped with hazelnut foam, in a coffee mug served with a chocolate stick was quite perfect.
The most interesting was perhaps the B 52 Blast which was Chilled triple see shot served with a Kalhua and Baileys ravioli.
The Kalhua and the Baileys shots were like seperate bubbles in the shot glass and once in the mouth they dissolve in a burst of flavour.
While the cafe plans to actually give molecular drinks training classes, you can still head over and ask the bartender to whip up something interesting for you. So head over...tank up!
