Chautala, son get 10-yr jail, supporters hurl bombs near court

A pitched battle was fought between the Delhi Police and supporters of INLD leader Om Prakash Chautala on Tuesday morning outside the Rohini court complex. As the judge read out the order sentencing the former chief minister of Haryana and his son Ajay to 10 years in jail in a corruption case, Chautala’s supporters thronging outside the court complex started throwing stones and crude bombs and clashed with the police who resorted to lathi charge and use of tear gas in a bid to restore order. According to the police, eight of their personnel were injured in the incident along with several protesters. The injured are being treated at Ambedkar Hospital.

Since early morning thousands of protesters gathered outside the court in support of their leader, who was convicted last week in a case of corruption involving recruitment of primary school teachers.

The court complex was barricaded to avoid any untoward incident. However, the supporters tried to enter the complex by breaching the barricades. On being disallowed they protested outside. The demonstration turned violent after the court announced the sentence.
