Charge of the youth brigade

The newbie party AAP is leading the youth brigade in Delhi assembly polls by fielding over 75 per cent candidates aged below 50. Young MLAs are likely to dominate the sixth Delhi assembly as all  three political parties — AAP, BJP and Congress have collectively fielded 53 per cent of candidates below that limit. Only 17 per cent candidates are above 60 years of age.

As per the affidavits submitted by the candidates to the Election Commission, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is leading the youth brigade by fielding 75.7 per cent candidates who are below 50.

The party has also fielded two 26-year-old candidates — Rituraj Govind from Kirari and Prakash from Deoli but no candidate above 70-years of age. The party’s age composition is as follows: 24 candidates are aged between 31 to 40, 23 candidates between 41 to 50 years, while Ram Nivas Goel (67) from Shahdara is the oldest AAP candidate in the fray.

Former DUSU president Nupur Sharma (29) who is pitted against AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal from New Delhi is BJP’s youngest candidate in this election, while the Congress has fielded 30 year olds — Sachin from Tughlakabad and Meenakshi Chandela from Rajouri Garden.

The grand-old-party has fielded the oldest candidate in Prem Singh (82) from Ambedkar Nagar while BJP’s Jagdish Mukhi (72) from Janakpuri is the second oldest candidate in the fray. Singh had lost the last election to AAP while Mukhi  has represented the Janakpuri Assembly seat since 1993. The Congress has reposed faith in 71-year-old Narender Nath from Shahdara assembly who had lost out to BJP-SAD candidate Jitender Singh Shunty last time around. The Congress has fielded 27 candidates aged between 51 to 60, while 23, of BJP’s candidates are in the 41 to 50 age bracket.

In Deoli Assembly seat all the three leading candidates are relatively youthful. AAP has fielded Prakash (26), Congress has given ticket to Rajesh Chauhan (44) and BJP has fielded Arvind Kumar (38). In Shalimar Bagh Assembly seat three 40- year- olds are locked in battle. AAP’s women cell chief Bandana Kumari (40) is locked in a triangular contest with sitting BJP councillor Rekha Gupta (40) and Congress’ Sulekh Aggarwal (43).
