Centre to tweak rural job scheme to empower poor

Stressing on the need to strengthen Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Gurantee Act
(MGNREGA) to empower the rural poor, union minister for rural development Birender Singh on Tuesday said that the rural job scheme would be tweaked to make it more people-friendly as the scheme has led to empowerment of poor people in the villages.

The union minister, who was talking to media after taking charge of the ministry, said, ‘Valuable suggestions have come regarding reforming the rural job scheme and all necessary steps will be taken to strike a right balance between creation of jobs and building durable assets through MGNREGA,’ adding that if need arises some new works will also be added to the scheme. Singh, however, acknowledged that there were some problems in the implementation of the scheme and the government will try to rectify the same.

On the issue of impending changes in the land acquisition Act, Singh said, ‘Efforts will be made to bring about a consensus on the issue as the Modi government is not against industrialisation, but the interests of the farmers should not be compromised at any cost. While answering queries of reporters after assuming the charge of key ministry said that he is not in favour of acquisition of multi-crop lands.

Earlier, minister of state for rural development Sudarshan Bhagat and minister of state for panchayati raj Nihal Chand also took charge of their respective ministries.
