Centre to give 123 properties to Waqf Board

After relaxing norms for regularisation of over 1,200 unauthorised colonies, Centre would soon sort out 123 Waqf properties in Delhi and hand them over to the Delhi Waqf Board.

At a recent meeting, which was held between Union Urban Development [UD] Minister Kamal Nath, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, Delhi UD Minister A K Walia and a dozen MLAs, Nath assured that he was aware about the proceedings and would soon solve the issue.

MLA Mateen Ahmed, who was present at the meeting, said, ‘I raised the issue of long pending 123 Waqf properties and Nath assured us that he will be dealing with it as soon as possible.’ For the last 27 years, these 123 properties, estimated to be worth over crores of rupees, were under litigation. Around 123 Waqf properties in Delhi were identified by the Burney Committee as being ‘illegally’ possessed by the Central government.

Earlier, Delhi high court had also directed the Central government to hand over these properties within six months and also formulate policies regarding the issue.

Sources said that soon these 123 properties would be denotified and their titles would be transferred to the Waqf Board. Meanwhile, political experts believe that this move would definitely help Congress ruled Delhi government garner support from the minorities in the city for the assembly elections slated for the next year.
