Centre to form panel to seek land requirements of new campuses

The government has decided to form a committee to review the land requirements of various central educational institutes in wake of difficulties arising in starting new campuses due to paucity of land and delay in acquiring them by the states.

The six-member committee, will be headed by secretary Higher Education SN Mohanty and, will submit its report within two months with its recommendations.

One of its mandate would be to recommend fresh norms and criteria for determining land requirement in different locations taking into account the topography and the class of city.

According to existing norms, land requirement varies from 100 acres in case of setting up of an Indian Institute of Information Technology to 500 acres for establishing an IIT.

‘These norms were determined a long time ago when land was available in abundance. However, with the burgeoning population and consequent expansion of cities, land has increasingly become a scarce commodity.
