‘Centre to establish 50,000 tech education centres’

Centre will establish 50,000 technology education centres in order to provide skills to 50 lakh personnels, said Oscar Fernandes, chairman, Parliamentry Standing Committee on MHRD, while inaugurating the Mother Teresa Chair in IGNOU.
He also said IGNOU has a big role to play as it is the ultimate destination of those, who cannot afford education through conventional universities. He also emphasised to reach out 30 per cent of the youth by 2020 from the current 19 per cent. The guest of honour Rev Dr Jacob Mar Bernabas said the establishment of the chair as a tribute to the Nobel Laureate Mother Teresa and talked on her zealous piety to God. Vice chancellor of IGNOU, Prof Gopinath Pradhan, said IGNOU is the largest University in the world catering to 29 lakh students in India and abroad.
The objectives of the initiative as said by Prof Gracious Thomas, Director, School of Social Work, IGNOU in his welcome address include wide range of socio-economic developments including activities targeting the HIV infected, leprosy patients, street children, etc of vulnerable population.
