Centre sets 3-week deadline to create Telangana state

Going ahead with its decision on the creation of Telangana, the Home Ministry plans to propose a cabinet note initiating the process of carving out a new state in the next 20 days. ‘We are preparing a note to pass a resolution in the Cabinet. Once we finalise the note, it will be sent to the Law Ministry for legal vetting. We hope the note will be presented before the Cabinet within 20 days,’ said home minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Monday.

The decision, of creating a separate Telangana, meanwhile, continued to create upheaval in Parliament. On Monday, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar suspended nine MPs from Andhra Pradesh for five days.  Lok Sabha could not transact any business because of the uproar. It also witnessed an ugly spat between Congress and the suspended TDP members after an adjournment and resulted in a complaint being made to the Speaker. In Rajya Sabha, too, two TDP members from the state were suspended for the day for disrupting the House on the issue.

On the other hand, the Cabinet, after giving its approval for creation of Telangana, is expected to set up a Group of Ministers (GoM) to go threadbare into issues arising out of the bifurcation of Andhra
Pradesh. This is likely to be followed by a resolution to be sent to the Andhra Pradesh Assembly over the formation of the new state.
