The Narendra Modi-led government on Saturday announced there will be no government bungalow made available for a memorial. While announcing the decisions, finance minister Arun Jaitley said, ‘Henceforth no bungalow will be made available for a memorial for any person.’
The decision came against the backdrop of Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Ajit Singh’s recent protest against orders to vacate his government allotted bungalow and demanding that it be converted into a memorial for his father and late prime minister Choudhary Charan Singh.
Jaitley also announced that events to mark Mahatma Gandhi’s birth and death anniversaries, which were organised by the Rajghat Committee, will now be organised by the central government.
Events to mark the birth and death anniversaries of other national leaders will be organised by private committees, the finance minister said.
It is pertinent to mention here that the issue of converting Ajit Singh’s Tughlaq Road bungalow into memorial to his father was politicised by the RLD. While raking up the issue, party workers had disconnected the water supply to Delhi from UP. The Samajwadi Party had also extended support to Ajit Singh’s campaign.
Apart from SP, JDU had also come in support of Ajit Singh. JD (U) leader KC Tyagi had said that the bungalow occupied by the RLD chief should be converted into a memorial in the honour of former prime minister.
‘Chaudhary Charan Singh was a great leader for farmers and also a freedom fighter. For us, he holds the same importance like Jawahar Lal Nehru and Indira Gandhi for the Congress and Syama Prasad Mukherjee and Deendayal Upadhyay for the BJP, that is why the farmers are demanding establishment of a memorial,’ Tyagi had said.
