If things go as per the plan, the second central university in Bihar would start functioning from this year’s academic session beginning in July. Sources in the Human Resource Development Ministry have said that the Centre has already issued notification regarding its operation.
“All that need is communiqué from Bihar government regarding providing temporary campus for the university. We have asked the state government to either provide a suitable land or a temporary campus. The moment HRD ministry will get the proposal of a functional campus, the ministry would not hesitate in taking steps to start admission process from this academic session only,” an HRD Ministry official said.
The Mahatama Gandhi Central University in Motihari was announced by the ousted UPA government in 2013. The then HRD Minister Kapil Sibal had okayed the setting up of two central universities in Bihar –in Motihari and Gaya. The announcement has come after a long war of words between the centre and the state government. The Centre had proposed the setting up of a Central University –Bihar’s first –in Gaya because of its better connectivity by air, rail and road. The Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government preferred Motihari –the place from where Mahatma Gandhi had launched his first agitation in India.
