The Centre on Monday said it was serious on the issue of reservation to Muslims in government jobs. ‘We are waiting for the Supreme Court’s decision in this regard and after a favourable decision, the central government will go ahead,’ union minority affairs minister K Rahman Khan told reporters at a joint press conference here along with Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav.
He said it required passage of bill in Parliament and for which the support of other parties including the Samajwadi Party was needed. Mr Yadav also supported the cause and said his party was willing to extend support as it would require constitutional amendment.
Earlier, raising the issue of Muslim reservation, UP minority welfare minister Mohd Azam Khan, also present on the occasion, said all the talks of minority welfare should start with the reservation. Khan along with union minister of state for minority affairs, Ninong Ering was here to review the progress of minority welfare schemes and implementation of Sacchar committee recommendations in the state. Rahman Khan said the centre was committed to implement Sacchar committee recommendations for the Muslims and would like to work in tandem with the state governments for this.
He said out of 69 recommendations accepted for implementation, the development of Muslim-dominated area and the education facilities for the Muslims were of the prime importance.
The union minister added that the centre had decided to set up an Equal Opportunity Commission to work out the modalities for the minorities to give them level playing field in the society. He said the UPA government would also establish a data bank for the minorities besides diversity commission to provide the Muslims varied opportunities. ‘The Union Government has also planned to set up six Muslim universities in the country, locations for which are still to be decided,’ he further added. Rahman Khan said all these proposals were in the advanced stage and would be cleared very soon.
