Central team leaves for UP to assess drought situation

In the wake of declaration of 44-districts as drought hit by Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, the union agriculture ministry sent an inter-ministerial team to the state on Wednesday to make an assessment of drought situation. The team over twhe next three days will visit varwious villages of drought affected districts to examine ground realities of crop and plantation conditions, availability of drinking water and food stock for animals.
‘During the visit the team besides holding meetings with the state administration will also collect details on the drought situation from the district and block level officials. The central team will also try to take feedback on the ground situation from local representatives and farmers,’ an official statement of agriculture ministry said.
The team comprises of specialists from the fields of agriculture, animal husbandry, irrigation, rural development, drinking water and power as well as representatives from the Food Corporation of India, finance ministry and the Planning Commission.
Notably, the UP government has sought Rs 6,061 special assistance from the centre under various heads such as Rs 685 crore towards farm investment subsidy, Rs 991 crore for the agriculture department, Rs 639 crore for the livestock department, Rs 1,498 crore for irrigation, Rs 415 crore for supply of drinking water in rural areas, Rs.1,162 crore for the electricity department, Rs 258 crore for minor irrigation and Rs 109 crore for the forest department.
