Come 2013, the answer sheets of class X examinees would be evaluated onscreen. Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), in a recent decision, has decided to go digital from 2013 for the evaluation of test papers of 10th class students and from 2014 for 12th class students. Under the new scheme, the answer sheets will be marked digitally by the computer to bring objectivity in the examination process. Vineet Joshi, Chairman of the CBSE, said: The Board in the first phase has decided to implement the on-screen marking of answer books in 2013 for class X examination and class XII in second phase in 2014 examination. This would set-up new standards of evaluation.’
According to board officials, the answer books in sealed bags received from examination centres will be handed over to the service provider by the chief secrecy officer of the concerned examination after fixing bar coded stickers.
Thereafter the answer sheets would be scanned for onscreen marking. The whole process of receiving the answer sheets, scanning and digitalising it would be performed by a service provider.
The board intends to select more than one service provider with relevant experience in onscreen marking, evaluation and assessment. The service provider would also be required to train board officials in the onscreen evaluation process. The first batch to be trained would be the head examiners for the 2013 examination, who would get appointed in December 2013.
Speaking on the current initiative, Joshi said: ‘The board is regularly taking initiatives for setting high standards and improving overall quality on a continuous basis to enhance speed and transparency in evaluation. Onscreen evaluation is efficient method of marking.
The assessment scoring system must provide for safe scoring environment.’
