CBI turns the heat on politicians

Tightening the noose around politicians, the CBI on Tuesday registered an FIR against former telecom minister and DMK leader Dayanidhi Maran on one hand and claimed that BJP leader Prakash Javadekar has admitted to his presence at the meeting shown in a CD of a sting operation on the other. The probe agency also questioned intelligence bureau special director Sudhir Kumar in connection with Gujarat’s Sadiq Jamal fake encounter case.

In the first case, the CBI claimed Javadekar had admitted his presence in a CD which showed him allegedly trying to put hurdles in the path of judicial proceedings in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh staged killing. The CBI, had on 27 September, questioned Javadekar and party MP Bhupendra Singh Yadav in connection with the tape. Party general secretary Ram Lal will also be questioned.

The sole witness of Sohrabuddin encounter case, Tulsiram Prajapati, was killed allegedly in a staged shootout in 2006. Gujarat’s then minister of state for home Amit Shah is the main accused in the case.

In the CD, the leaders are purportedly shown discussing how Prajapati’s mother Narmadabai can be convinced to change her vakalat. In the second case, the CBI filed a case against Maran and BSNL officials for allegedly allotting 300 high-speed telephone lines to Maran’s residence in Chennai which were extended to his brother’s channel.
