CBI ready to take up Saradha probe

In an interesting turn of events, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has indicated that it is willing to take up the Saradha chit fund scam probe if the Calcutta High Court wants to vest in it the responsibility.

A three-page affidavit was submitted in the court in response to a PIL filed by Basabi Raychaudhuri  seeking a CBI inquiry into the chit fund probe. The demand for an ‘independent’ CBI inquiry has been raised by Opposition parties and affected agents and investors. In fact, a Left Front delegation will submit a memorandum to the President and Prime Minister on 9 May to press for a CBI inquiry into the scam.  The PIL demanding a  CBI probe comes up for hearing on Wednesday.

The court had last week directed the West Bengal government to file an affidavit on its stand on the prayer for a CBI probe into the chit fund scam involving crores of rupees.

Also, one of the cars belonging to prime accused Sudipto Sen – a Mercedes (priced around Rs 95 lakh) was seized by the police from a South Kolkata residence. The car, which was used by Sen’s son, was parked in a friend's garage and police sources said that Sen wanted to sell the car.The Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate also summoned a number of suspects for interrogation on Tuesday.

The scam was detected following the closure of several media houses run by Saradha Group which has defaulted on repayment to lakhs of investors. Protests are being held by the investors and agents of the company in different parts of the state and the chit fund company’s offices and its other properties have been reported to be vandalised.

Sen had fled the state, was arrested from Sonamarg in Kashmir along with his close associate Debjani Mukherjee and another employee Arvind Singh Chauhan.
