CBI once again examines TKA Nair in coal scam case

The CBI on Monday once again examined TKA Nair, the former advisor to former prime minister Manmohan Singh, in connection with court monitored irregularities in the allocation of coal blocks.

Sources said, earlier in March this year Nair was examined and in June he was contacted again by the CBI sleuths twice after they had found some discrepancies in his statements. It was learnt that the sleuths probing the ‘coal-gate’ sent a list of questions to Nair and he subsequently filed reply to the CBI.

The questions revolves around the allocation of Talabira coal block in Odisha to Hindalco, delay in auctioning of coal blocks and missing coal files, of the period when the former PM was holding the charge of the coal ministry. The CBI has already registered a case against the former coal secretary P C Parakh and chairman of Aditya Birla Group Kumar Mangalam Birla in connection with the Talabira coal block allocation after it was found that the deal went in favor of Hindalco even after being rejected by the screening committee.

‘Our role in examining Nair is over. There will be no more examining. He was examined last month because we felt that some clarification is required on several points after our investigating team has failed to understand some of his replies and justification over allocation of coal blocks,’ a CBI official said. On the context why the former PM was not examined so far in this connection, he said, ‘Presently we don’t have any such plans. Our team will proceed with whatever it may require to streamline the case.’

Apart from Nair, the CBI sleuths had already questioned two officials, deployed in the PMO between 2006 and 2009, Ashish Gupta and Vini Mahajan.
