CBI may seek closure of probe for some coal blocks

The agency is carrying out probe into allocation of 195 coal blocks which are covered under three preliminary enquiries (PEs) registered by it--allotments between 2006 and 2009, allocations between 1993 and 2004, and projects given under government dispensation scheme.

The agency has also found during its PEs that a number of these blocks were allocated as per norms and there was no corruption involved. According to sources, CBI would give a list of such blocks to the Supreme Court during the hearing on November 26 with a request that further probe into these coal blocks can be closed as no criminality was involved.

They, however, said a final view would be taken by the apex court which might direct the agency on the road ahead.

It has also registered 14 regular cases in which prima facie finding of corruption has surfaced. The sources clarified that probe would be taken to its logical conclusion in these FIRs and a final report would be filed in the trial court.

The agency would also be submitting an affidavit on the isue of its autonomy in the backdrop of the government’s stand that no further powers can be given to CBI.

The agency is demanding the powers of a Secretary in the Government for India for its Director but these demands have been turned down by the Centre through an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court on November 13.

The CBI chief has powers equivalent to the Director General of a para-military force.
