CBI may not register FIR against ex-2G prosecutor

The CBI seems unlikely to register an FIR in the case of recording of audio tape which purportedly contained voices of sacked CBI prosecutor AK Singh and Sanjay Chandra, MD of Unitech and an accused in the 2G case. The probe has indicted it was mere boasting on the part of Singh for which the CBI may recommend departmental action against him.

Sources, however, said a decision would be taken only after the direction of the Supreme Court which is monitoring the 2G case. The apex court is likely to hear the case in next few days.

The CD purportedly carried a conversation between the two discussing ways to allegedly weaken the case. Singh was removed from the 2G case after the audio tape surfaced. Sources said the probe has found that no sensitive information relating to the case has been passed on and it could be a case of corporate rivalry in the telecom sector that is behind the recording of the audio tape.

The CBI had initially registered a Preliminary Enquiry after the tape surfaced. It had formed a special team to look into the issue and to see if any harm was done to the case.
