CBI fails to present proof against Vivek Dutt

The Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI) may not have a very strong case against two of their own officers, including the chief investigating officer of the coal-gate scam case. The agency has so far failed to present any evidence before the court in support of their claim.

A Delhi court on Wednesday, while granting the CBI one more day’s custody of the arrested CBI officer and others, pulled up the Investigating Officer (IO) for not producing the accused before it within time.

Special CBI Judge GP Singh directed the IO to appear before him on Thursday at 10 am along with the entire case diary and the CD as well as transcripts of the recorded conversations between the accused persons.

Superintendent of Police Vivek Dutt and inspector Rajesh Karnatak were arrested on 17 May for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs. 7 lakh from businessman Dinesh Chand Gupta to settle his land dispute which was being investigated by Delhi police.

On Tuesday, CBI had sought Supreme Court’s permission to remove Dutt from the team of 33 officers probing the coal blocks allocation scam.

The counsel for Vivek Dutt, Ravinder Singh said, ‘Until now there is no evidence against our client which could say that they were involved in any corruption.’

The sources also said that the case in which Dutt has been accused of accepting bribe was amicably settled in the High Court on 10 May.
