Caught on camera: Endangered Snow leopard in Nanda Devi National Park

It was captured in the Malari area of Kosa reserve in the reserve forest of the Uttarakhand. The age of the big cat may be four to five years, and from the camera image, it seems to be full-grown male, agile and healthy.

Spread over an area of 630 sq km, the national park is counted as the world heritage site as declared by UNESCO. Himalayan musk deer, black bear, Himalayan tahr, brown bear, bharal are common inhabitants of the heritage park. Camera traps installed at different locations at Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve monitor the activities of wild animals and source of information for the wildlife experts.

‘It is good news for nature lovers and wildlife conservation that trap camera captured images of two snow leopards in less than two weeks. Snow leopard is a globally endangered species and the prized possession of the mountain region,’ according to RBS Rawat, principal chief conservator of forests in Uttarakhand.

The total population of snow leopard in India ranges from 450 to 500 approximately, and is one of the threatened species of wild animals. Many big cats are on the hit-list of poachers, for high demand in the illegal trade. For this reason, senior officials are restricted to give detailed information of the snow leopard roaming in the higher reaches of the hill state.
