When her father Giancarlo is transferred to Rome from a small country town of Montalto Di Castro, 12-yearold Caterina’s life is turned upside down. Slowly, she discovers new classmates and a completely new world.
Caterina va in città (Cateria in the Big City) proceeds as a satire on her would-be friends who are the offsprings of the rich, famous and politically important of Italy’s ruling elite. Caterina’s world is now politically divided. She starts developing friendship with the 'left side’, represented by Margherita, and the right, Daniela. Soon, she will lose herself, without knowing who she really is. As her friends gradually lead her into more absurd and grandiose social situations and outbursts of dangerous delinquency, her bemused parents try to monitor her progress and desperately ingratiate themselves with the more well-to-do parents of Caterina’s friends. However, there could be some light at the end of the tunnel. All hopes now rest on Edward, the young Australian boy, who lives in the apartment across hers.
