The carcass of a 22-year-old male elephant was found in a forest in Nayagram area of West Midnapore district on Wednesday. Locals in Narasinhapur spotted the animal's body with its 1.5 feet long tusks intact near the village, Kharagpur DFO Anjan Guha said. Post-mortem of the carcass, which had no external injury, was done and it was established that the elephant died due to heart failure, the official said. The pachyderm was part of a 100-member strong herd, which originally came from Dalma forest in Jharkhand and was now gathered at Baghdoba forest near Narasinhapur for the past three-four days, Guha said.
