The police have also launched a helpline — 991064164, where one can send pictures or videos of people drinking in their cars, especially outside roadside eateries. The police officials believe that the move could help curb the incidents of drunk driving in the city. ‘Such people are most likely to drive back home in a drunken state. Also, this practise has been witnessed mostly in and around residential colonies. Sometimes, the women also feel very insecure. We hope to bring this menace under control’, said Sindhu Pillai, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Vigilance).
Recently, a complaint was received by the vigilance department, in which the complainant mentioned about a Wine and Beer shop near his residence, outside which, people would start drinking in their cars from afternoon only. Later, the concerned police officials were pulled up for inaction.
The officers believe that this will also bring down corruption among the cops. In recent past, Delhi Police have taken action against several cops for indulging in corrupt activities. According to police records, three police officials, including an assistant sub inspector were arrested this year under charges of corruption. Apart from that, as many as 39 police officials were suspended for alleged corrupt practises.
Interestingly, the vigilance department has deployed few cops as ‘spies’ to collect evidences against corrupt policemen, especially traffic officials stationed at the borders against whom highest number of complaints were received. These cops have been asked to click pictures or make video/voice recordings as evidence and send it to the department.
