The city's tallest building, Civic Center, lacks adequate CCTV surveillance despite being on the hit list of terrorists. The security loophole was exposed after a two-wheeler was stolen from the basement parking of the 28-floor building last week.
'A project to install CCTV cameras inside the building and in the basement parking area was approved but never made it beyond the official files,' said Mukesh Goel, leader of opposition in the North DMC, which has the responsibility of the building's maintenance. At present the complex has only four CCTV cameras, two at gate number three and two at gate number five, which are generally used to scan entry and exit of visitors and vehicles. There are no CCTV cameras inside the five towers of the Civic Centre complex, the tallest of which is 102-meters high.
On Thursday afternoon, the administration introduced a system of issuing a token to outside vehicles entering the Civic Centre complex to prevent theft of vehicles. 'A two-wheeler belonging to an employee working in the office of the leader of the House of North Delhi Municipal Corporation (North DMC) was stolen on 2 April. The token system will prevent such cases of vehicle theft. The tokens will be issued when an outside vehicle enters the complex and the owner will have to return the token while leaving the grounds,’ said a security guard. Senior security officers confirmed the introduction of the new system, but denied its link to the recent vehicle theft. 'There have been several cases of vehicle theft and small thefts in the building so we are working on strengthening the security system,' said a senior security officer. In addition to the 28 floors, the complex has three basements, B-1, B-2 and B-3, where thousands of vehicles are parked everyday.
'We are working on a module to strengthen the security system of the building. A survey will soon be carried out to identify places inside the building where CCTV cameras are to be installed,' said Mayank Sharma, additional commissioner (finance), who also heads the coordination committee of Civic Center. The committee has been assigned to look into the security and upkeep of the building complex.
