Capital’s poor to get more LPG

In a major relief to around four lakh poor families living in the city below the poverty line [BPL], Delhi government on Monday decided to facilitate them with three more LPG cylinders on subsidised rate, apart from the first six being provided by the union government in a year.

Delhi will be the first state to take such a step after the Centre announced the cap on cooking gas cylinders last week.

The Centre, last week, had decided that each household will get six cylinders of 14.2-kg per annum at the subsidised rate of Rs 399 and any requirement beyond that would have to be procured at the market rate of Rs 746 per bottle.

Delhi government would release an amount of around Rs 350 per cylinder difference of the price of a non-subsidised and subsidised cylinder in Delhi.

At a Cabinet meeting, convened by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, it was decided that the government would spare an amount of Rs 42 crore per annum to meet the additional cost of the cylinder.

More than 3.56 lakh families including BPL, Antyodaya Anna Yojna [AAY] and Jhuggi Ration Card [JRC] holders, are covered under the scheme.

Dikshit said, ‘The government is committed to safeguard the interests of Aam Aadmi. This step would also go a long way in ensuring full implementation of Kerosene Free Dilli Scheme in order to ensure a clean environment for women working in the kitchens.’

The Delhi government had launched a scheme last month to make Delhi kerosene-free by giving free gas stoves, cylinder and regulator to all families covered under BPL, AAY and JRC.

Asked whether the excess amount of Rs 347 per cylinder will be given to oil companies or the beneficiaries, officials said the details are being worked out.
