If the winter chill in the national capital is giving you a tough time, don’t bank on your electric heaters and water geysers to bring any respite as the acute power shortage facing the national capital is only going to add to winter woes.
The capital city is all set to face significant power shortage in the coming few days. The condition is particularly bad in rural parts of Delhi and the unauthorised colonies.
The Dadri power generation plant, which was shut down on Friday due to a leakage in the boiler tube, could not start operations till late on Sunday evening depriving the national capital of around 380 mega watt (MW) power. Similarly, one of the units of Badarpur Thermal Power Station has been shut for over a week now because of leakage in boiler drum hole, while two others have been closed because of power shortage. As a result, Delhi could get only around 215 MW from the power station, which is expected to give at least 620 MW on a daily basis to the city.
According to an official at Delhi Tranco Limited, several power-generation units such as Dhauli Ganga, Nathpa Jhakri, Auraiya, Jhajjar ISTPP and Rithala have been closed down due to annual maintenance work.
On the other hand, the gas-based Bawana Power Plant, whose power producing capacity is 1,500 MW, has been producing only 230 MW since it was set up. Of late, however, the plant has completely stopped production because of the non-availability of gas.
Apart from this, Delhi government’s power generation units such as Indraprastha Power Generation Company and Gas Turbine Power Station have been closed for around a week due to technical snags.
As a result of this shortage north-east Delhi areas such as Jagatpuri, Seemapuri, Mustafabad, Karawal Nagar, Seelampur and Sant Nagar are facing acute power shortage.
