Capital enjoys a pleasant summer

Seems like Delhi is being visited by the good weather Santa. Tourists may huff and puff –  30-plus degrees is no joke when you were out sightseeing, alright.

But Delhi’ites are counting their blessings. Today, for instance, even though the maximum settled at 38.7 degree Celsius, average for this time of the year, the day’s minimum was three notches below average!

According to  India Meteorological Department (IMD), Friday’s minimum temperature was three notches below average at 21.6 degrees Celsius while the humidity levels wavered between a high of 69 and a low of 29 per cent.

A true Delhi’ite knows one or two notches make a lot of difference. And a true Delhi’ite also knows to avoid the mid-day sun, irrespective of one or two notches windfall.

IMD also predicts that the weather will be similar on Saturday with partly cloudy skies. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 38 and 22 degrees Celsius.

In case you are wondering, Thursday’s maximum temperature was a notch below normal at 37.6 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature dipped three notches below normal to 21.4 degrees Celsius.

April, which can be oppressive – bringing in its wake the unbearable heat wave or looh – in Delhi gave the first break to Delhi’ites in 18 years. The whole of April, temperatures hovered in the 30s (as compared to the average 40 degree Celsius). The month’s highest temperature was 38.7 degrees Celsius.

Freaky fate had a hand to play in this turn of events: the fast-moving western disturbances ensured an untimely cool spell, apparently. April even sported a bit of fog! Ask a true Delhi’ite and he will tell you that it was nothing short of a miracle.

Perhaps, in the longer run, it goes to prove that world is going wonky. But meanwhile, Delhi’ites are breathing sighs of relief and counting the pennies that they saved by switching off the air conditioners.
