The Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections took a turn for the ugly on Monday with violence at the Hansraj college campus.
National Students Union of India (NSUI) alleged that ‘the violent attack by the Aakhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) goons in the city’s premier college, Hansraj, was giving student politics a communal colour. While the aim of the unions should be on making campuses student-friendly and safe, the attack has left those at Delhi University (DU) college campuses in a state of shock.'
Amrish Ranjan Pandey, NSUI spokesperson said, 'The goon’s who were spotted moving in the car with registered no DL1CQ0371 attacked the NSUI office bearer, before managing to flee. The car in which the goons had been driving, was found to be the one used by the AVBP presidential candidate, Aman Awana. The attackers have been found to be professional bouncers. The attack has given a criminal turn to students politics.’
Pandey also alleged that 'The attack on Nikhil Diwevdi, national secretary, NSUI, has injured him seriously and resulted in a fractured back bone. The conspiracy played by ABVP goons has ruined the beauty of the university campus and the upcoming elections'.
Meanwhile, Rohit Chaha, state secretary of ABVP said, 'These are false allegations against us, as we are gaining momentum in campaigning and getting good response from the students. NSUI is tarnishing the image of our candidates and party.'
Sindhu Pillai, North Campus commissioner of police said, 'Both the outfits, NSUI and ABVP, have lodged FIRs against each other in Maurice Nagar, police station. But no arrests have been made yet.’
DUSU polls are scheduled to be held on 13 September.
