“Given that most of the major NCDs, generally labeled as ‘lifestyle diseases’, are acquired, there is an urgent need for paying attention on their preventive aspects,” Nadda said, while launching a media campaign on NCDs.
Underlining that social behavioural change plays a major role in preventing NCDs, Nadda said, “Yoga and knowledge in AYUSH system of medicine can be of great help in not only preventing, but also controlling non-communicable diseases. Yoga is not only a physical activity, but a complete science of living. Yoga is being encouraged as an integral part of NCD prevention and management.”
He launched the m-diabetes initiative, which harnesses the power of the vast mobile telephony network. A caller just needs to give a missed call at 011-22901701 to get information on diabetes and how to prevent and control it.
One can also log on to www.mdiabetes.nhp.gov.in for more information. Nadda also launched the guidelines for screening of diabetes, hypertension and cancer.
“I am sure that the guidelines will help the programme managers in planning and implementing the screening at mass level,” he said.
