Cameras to track rogue drivers could yield crores

Cameras for prosecution of traffic violators in the city could generate revenue to the tunes of crores. This money can further be utilised to purchase road safety equipment, said Delhi Traffic Police on Tuesday.

On Monday, a workshop on road safety was organised by Delhi Traffic Police. They named it ‘Making Road Safer : Multi-Sectorial Response’. The various stakeholders who participated in the workshop
include officials from PWD, NDMC, DDA, Delhi Cantonment Board and AIIMS Trauma Centre.

“Various agencies are involved in road safety and they play their own role within their realms,” said Muktesh Chander, Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic).

In the workshop, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Anil Shukla, also informed that on-the-spot prosecution by the police has been raised by 9 percent. He also emphasised that road safety interventions like reflective nose protection, bollards, mastic and rambler strips, reflective tapes and high friction surfacing should be applied on roads for better traffic regulation and reduction in accidents.

One of the main reasons behind fatal accidents is the drunken driving and the last year there were special drives against the drunken driving. Courts have also sent some of the drunken drivers to a few day jail terms and this had very deterrent impact on the violators.

“Regular meetings of the Local Work Task Force and introduction of various interventions have resulted in decline in fatal accidents. In last five years, as many as 2005 precious human lives were saved,” Shukla added.

Dr Amit Gupta from the AIIMS Trauma Centre further informed that out of 1.5 to 1.75 lakh fatalities every year, around 45 percent take place on city roads. And in most of these cases, time can be saved through timely emergency care or trauma care.
