Cameras to check illegal construction, traffic in East

East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) is planning to install cameras on the top of highrise buildings in the area to monitor illegal constructions. A dozen cameras, with a range of 5 km radius, would be deployed at various strategic points to cover the entire EDMC areas.

'The cameras will help us in monitoring the illegal constructions from the headquarters. We hope to be able to break the nexus between corporations employees and police, which allow the illegal construction,” said S S Yadav, EDMC Commissioner. 'The resolution of the cameras demonstrated in the presentation made by the company last week was very high,' added Yadav.

The presentation was made by the IT department of Delhi government and some private companies. A monitoring centre is also being proposed in the EDMC headquarters where these cameras would be linked with computers.

'Once the infrastructure is created, we can use the cameras for various purposes like penalising illegal parking and planning traffic decongestion and sanitation,' said Yadav. According to the presentation, a dozen cameras would be able to cover the entire EDMC area. The city, which started to develop in mid-70s, has developed adhoc and has maximum number of unauthorised colonies, juggis, and illegal constructions.

In a recent review meeting, the officers have reported that apartments and multistorey buildings do not have a layout plan posted in their premises as required. These buildings, by law, should display prominently the corporation approved plans. The corporation has asked them to submit the plans at the earliest failing which they would be penalised.
