Cambodia postpones release of poll results

Cambodia’s state election body has postponed announcing finalresults from last month’s general election, a move that could at least temporarily ease the threat of violence triggered by opposition protests.
The National Election Committee made the announcement today after the government acknowledged moving armored vehicles and troops into the capital, Phnom Penh, to keep order if a threatened mass protest by the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party spun out of control. The opposition has challenged the ruling Cambodian People’s Party’s claim of winning the 28 July election and charges there were widespread electoral irregularities. It has said it would reject the results unless there was an impartial independent probe.
