A proposal to amend the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) Act to restore the powers of the body is expected to be taken up by the Union Cabinet on Thursday.
The amendment has become necessary after a Supreme Court ruling last year which had stripped the council of its powers to approve institutes offering technical courses.
Sources in the HRD ministry said the AICTE (Amendment) Bill will be taken up in the ongoing Parliament Session if the proposal receives the Cabinet’s nod. The proposal seeks to amend Section 2(h) of the Act and insertion of Section 24(A) in the Amendment Bill.
