CAB flashes ‘Mr Anjali’; bowler Sachin enthralls Eden crowd

CAB’s second goof-up came in as many days when the giant display at the High Court end kept on flashing Welcome ‘Mr Anjali Tendulkar and Master Arjun Tendulkar’ during the lunch break on the opening day of the first Test between India and West Indies.

As Anjali along with son Arjun got into the president’s box around the lunch break, the giant screen flashed the wrong message and it was only after a few minutes that the mistake was realised and corrected, but by then the damage was done.

CAB, which had already drawn flak for its over-enthusiastic preparations for Tendulkar’s 199th Test, had on Tuesday misspelt the senior batsman’s name as ‘Sachine’ in a giant billboard. CAB had then put the entire blame on a private agency.  CAB, however, apologised for the goof-up. ‘It’s really unfortunate that something or other is happening everyday. We’re helpless now as it’s being looked after by a private agency. However, we’re committed to take action against the agency after the match gets over. We apologise for the inconvenience it caused,’ an apologetic CAB joint secretary Subir Ganguly said.

On Tuesday, India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, immediately after entering the press conference, had pointed out CAB’s mistake of misspelling the iconic batsman’s name.

Meanwhile, it was Sachin Tendulkar written all over Eden Gardens on Wednesday as thousands of his fans from all walks of life poured in to watch the batting legend in action one last time at the ground in his penultimate and 199th Test match.

Office-goers, who took leaves, and school and college students, who missed their classes, were welcomed at the stadium with large Tendulkar posters, which quoted the champion batsman as saying: ‘Enjoy your game and chase your dreams, because dreams do come true.’ Die-hards fans walked in with ‘Sachin’ painted on their faces in tri-colours. The toss started amid chants of ‘Sachin, Sachin’ but fans were left disappointed as India lost it and West Indies chose to bat first. On hearing the news, many fans chose to stay away from the proceedings as they wanted to watch their favourite cricketer bat for the last time at the historic Eden Gardens.

The crowd got the opportunity to cheer Tendulkar when he went to the boundary line as a fielder from the 20th over after India captain MS Dhoni introduced spin from both ends. Even the match tickets became a collector’s item for fans as it had Sachin photographs and autograph printed on it. Earlier, playing his 199th match, Tendulkar was presented with a memento by police commissioner Surajit Kar Purkayastha as both the squads wished the maestro best of luck in his farewell series.

Despite all the hype and hoopla surrounding his farewell series, Tendulkar appeared calm and casual as he underwent the fielding drills with his teammates about an hour before the start of play. Before the start of the game, he was seen playing a friendly football match along with his teammates and then did some catching practice in the shadow.

The crowd finally had moments of celebration when a tricky delivery from Tendulkar trapped Shane Shillingford in the 63rd over. Shouting ‘Sachin Sachin’ on the top of their voices and vigorously waving the tri-colour, a festive atmosphere engulfed the stadium all of a sudden as Shillingford was adjudged LBW off Tendulkar for five. It was his 46th Test wicket. In the two overs he bowled, Tendulkar gave only five runs, while grabbing a wicket.
