Textile industry set to create 62.12 lakh new jobs by 2020

New Delhi: The textile ministry is targeting additional employment of 62.12 lakh in the organised sector by 2020. The textile minister Smriti Irani mentioned in a written reply in the Upper House that a survey for skill gap analysis was conducted by the Textiles Committee in May of last year.

The study also projected skilling requirement for 30.56 lakh persons, with 23.89 Lakh was for Apparel Sector. The government has further approved an outlay of Rs. 1300 crore for the entire value chain to address the skill gap in the sector, excluding spinning and weaving in the organised sector under a new Samarth-Scheme for Capacity Building in Textile Sector (SCBTS) scheme.

Earlier to address the skilled manpower requirements the ministry implemented the Integrated Skill Development Scheme (ISDS) from 2010 to 2018. The scheme was implemented on a pan India basis. 11.14 lakh persons were trained out of which 8.43 lakh persons were given employment under this scheme, the ministry official data mentioned.

"The objectives of National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF) compliant skilling programmes to incentivise and supplement the efforts of the industry in creating jobs in the organised textile and related sectors and to provide skilling and skill-upgradation in the traditional sectors. 10.00 lakh persons will be trained under the scheme," the minister added in her reply in Parliament.
