'Sugarcane industry is backbone of rural economy'

Kolkata: The past President of Indian Sugar Mills Association, Om Prakash Dhanuka has written to the Food Secretary, suggesting for increase of import duty on sugar, measures to strengthen the sliding sugar price, creation of buffer stock and helping the weak sugar factories. The Government have accepted few suggestions of increasing the import duty to 100% and also regulated the supply for February and March, 2018.
India contributes about 15 percent of world sugar production and has annual production of about 25-28 million tonnes in recent past.
About 50 million sugarcane farmers are involved in sugarcane cultivation and therefore, the sector is an important driver of rural economy.
There are 600 sugar factories and about 200 Distilleries producing Ethanol being used in admixing with Petrol.
