Expect workers' wage settlement in coming weeks: Tata Motors

Tata Motors on Thursday said it expects to resolve with its workers the issue of compensation related to long term settlement in the coming weeks.

The company and workers' unions have been in talks for several months but they have not yielded results. "As per the labour laws and practices, there are ongoing discussions on compensation related to the Long Term Settlement (LTS); expected to be mutually resolved in the coming weeks," a company spokesperson said in an emailed response.

Earlier this week, union members at the Pune plant had met Tata Group Chairman Emeritus Ratan Tata who had visited the plant with the new Chairman of the Group N Chandrasekaran.

It is understood that the two leaders of the Tata group assured the workers that the matter would be resolved soon.

The company spokesperson further said: "Tata Motors has always encouraged a cordial and mutually trusted partnership with its workers individually as well as with the representatives of the Trade Unions."

Last November, during the peak of fight between Tata Sons and its ousted Chairman Cyrus Mistry, two unions of the company representing around 16,000 employees had written to the management expressing their support to Ratan Tata.

At that time, Tata Motors Employees Union, Pune had alleged that "the once cordial relations between Tata Motors Pune plant management and the employees have taken a downward turn since the last 14 months over various negotiable issues".
