Coal India powers April output to 38 million tonnes

The state-owned CIL produced 38.44 million tonnes of coal in April, falling short of the target of 43.58 mt. Its offtake was 45.29 mt against the target of 49.51 mt. The world's largest coal miner is eyeing 1 billion tonnes of coal output by 2020.

The company, which accounts for over 80 per cent of domestic coal output, had missed the annual production target by 44.48 mt against a target of 598.61 mt and its offtake target by 55.45 mt for 2016-17. Coal India hopes that with national power generation rising by 4.7 per cent and prediction of an early summer, there will be higher coal demand.
