April-Dec 2017 sees 40% rise in granting of patents

New Delhi: Indian Patent office has granted 8,940 patents during April-December 2017, an increase of 40 per cent over the same period previous year, which experts say reflects growing innovation and economic activities in the country.
As per a data of the commerce and industry ministry, the patent office has also granted trademarks and designs to 2,18,383 and 7,406 applicants, respectively during the period as compared to 1,60,363 and 5,421 during April-December 2016.
Registration of copyrights too jumped multifold to 14,217 as against 2,141 during the same period previous year. According to experts, growth in patent and design registration is a good news for India if domestic players are getting those.
