A 28-year-old man was hacked to death with an axe by a burglar in North-East Delhi’s Sonia Vihar area on Thursday night. The burglar was caught by the locals and was beaten to death with the same axe.
The incident took place at around 11.30 pm when Chitranjan Kumar, who owns a mobile shop in the area, was sleeping in his bedroom at the first floor. He was living with his family. The burglar managed to enter the first floor of the building and tried to open an almirah kept in Kumar’s room.
According to police, hearing some noise Kumar woke up and saw a burglar trying to open the almirah. When Kumar tried to raise an alarm, the thief overpowered him and hacked him to death with the help of an axe he was carrying with him. While escaping from his room, he locked Kumar’s room from outside and tried to flee but one of the family members saw him. The burglar hit that person too and fled away.
“The locals caught him when Kumar’s brother raised an alarm. He was beaten to death by the locals. Few of them also attacked him with the same axe he used to kill Kumar. One of them informed police who rushed the accused to the nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead. He has not been identified as yet,” the police said.
A case under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at Sonia Vihar police station.
