Despite three raids, the Delhi police has failed to nab the mastermind who burgled Rs 50 lakh, and who was supposedly hiding in Jharkhand’s Naxal belt for a month. The burglary had taken place at Cosmos Infra Engineering, a real estate firm located at Connaught Place area on 14 April. The owner found that the lockers at his office were broken and Rs 50 lakh cash was missing.
Initial investigation pointed fingers at the office boy. The police laid a trap and arrested Jamuna Mandal, the office boy, nine days after the case was reported at the Connaught Place police station.
But later, when the police accessed the CCTV cameras, it was found that another person was also involved. When Jamuna Mandal was caught, he confessed the involvement of an associate, identified as Mahender Mandal.
Mahendra, supposedly the mastermind of this burglary hailed from Kirhari, a village in the Giridih district in Jharkhand. The village is said to be under the influence of Naxal-Maoists.
‘A special police team from Connaught Place police station was sent ‘thrice’ to Jharkhand to nab the accused, but he managed to escape every time,’ told a police officer to Millennium Post on condition of anonymity.
Delhi police officials are accusing the local police of being unhelpful in apprehending the main accused in the case. They also said that the local administration lacked control over the naxal dominated village and that the information about the raids were possibly leaked to the accused.
The police teams have spent at least three days every time in Jharkhand trying to catch Mahender, said the sources. Mahender was living in Delhi near Tis Hazari court. Two cases of auto-thefts have been registered against him in two police stations in Delhi. Mahender has also been charged for a fake currency case in his hometown, said an official.
The police has recovered Rs 2 lakh from Jamuna Mandal while the rest is supposedly with Mahender.
