Burdwan case: NIA zeroes down on Huji, JeI leaders

On Thursday, the Centre handed over the Burdwan blast case to NIA and probe revealed that the conspiracy to build a firm base in West Bengal, Bihar and in Kerala by Bangladeshi terror outfits was hatched between 2011 and 2013. During these years series of meetings were conducted by the terror groups in the bordering areas of West Bengal.

A confidential alert issued by the Intelligence Bureau in July seems to have some connection with the Burdwan blast. The report says that a meeting was organised to conspire against India by HuJI at Bara Jamia Arabia and Bag-e-Jannat Qawmi Madrasa at Benapole by Bag-e-Jannat Qawmi madrasa’s president Ajhaz Nazrul Islam.

The meeting was attended by another JeI leader and ameer (leader) of Rajshahi division Moulana Faysal, Moulana Bakhtiar Hossain (central committee member of HuJI-Bangladesh), Moulana Mohammad Hassan (who operates from Jhenaidah district in Bangladesh), Rejaul Karim (HuJI central committee member of Khulna division), Abu Sufian (HuJI central committee member of Jessore division) and Moulana Abdul Mannan — head of Islamia Jamia Madrasa.

The report further says that after the meeting Ajhaj revealed that two HuJI cadres Arif Billah, a resident of Bakra village in Monirampur, under Jessore district and Bashiruddin, a resident of Goragunj Bazaar Masjid in Jhenaidah district in Bangladesh, were selected for more attacks in India in the coming years.

‘They were asked to enter India through Benapole border in West Bengal to carry out attacks in Gujarat, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Delhi... Another HuJI leader Altaf, a resident of Jhenaidah district, was assigned to provide necessary arrangements for lodging and food,’ the report reads.

On 18 and 19 June, once again the leaders met at Imadadul Uloom Madrasa at Faridabad in Dhaka where Ajhaj revealed that the HuJI cadres were asked to stay at the house of one Bidhan Sarkar, a resident of Gaighata in Bongaon. Inquiry revealed that Bidhan is working for HuJI on the instruction of Ajhaj in providing logistic support.

Informed sources said, two suspected militants — Shakil Ahmed and Sovan Mandal — who were killed and another person Hasan Saheb who was injured in the explosion on 2 October in a house at Khagragarh in Burdwan town, is a part of the larger conspiracy, which was hatched by Ajhaj in Bangladesh.

‘We are trying to connect leads between the blast and meetings which took in the bordering areas where Ajhaj was present,’ sources said.

Meanwhile, a team of NIA officials visited the CID headquarters on Friday and asked for relevant files to carry the probe further. They have also visited the site in Burdwan where the explosion has taken place. West Bengal governor Keshri Nath Tripathi the ‘real facts’ would come out after the investigation is done. He said, ‘NIA is investigating the blast in Burdwan and I think real facts will come out after the probe. West Bengal is a state bordering Bangladesh and it is necessary to be specially alert and take measures to maintain law and order.’

The Centre had on Thursday decided to hand over to NIA the probe into the bomb blast in Burdwan in which the role of terror groups is suspected.

This is for first time that the Centre has taken a suo motu decision to hand over a probe into a bomb blast case in any part of the country to the NIA since this premier agency was created in 2008 after the Mumbai terror attack. Four persons, including two women, have been arrested so far in the connection.
