The much-awaited polling process for the Delhi University Student Union (DUSU) elections came to a peaceful end on Friday with around 43.60 per cent students exercising their right to vote.
Chief election officer of DUSU Ashok Vohra, said, ‘I am happy that the polls went off peacefully without any trouble. This might be because students felt safe amid tight security.’
Talking about the voting pattern, Vohra said that very few students from the law faculty exercised their right to vote. ‘Only six students voted out of a total of 130 in the first round of voting that ended 12.30 pm. He said in Khalsa College only 525 students out of the total 2,000 had cast their vote by 12.30. However, around 80 per cent students from Ayurvedic and Unani Tibbia College participated in the polling.
Sources said, reports of faulty electronic voting machines were received from around 11-12 colleges.Â
Twelve candidates are in the fray for the post of president and vice-president, 17 for the post of secretary and 10 are contesting for the post of joint secretary in the DUSU elections. The voting scheduled for the morning colleges was between 8.30 am and 12.30 pm. Students of evening colleges voted between 3 and 7 pm.
The ban on printed posters failed to deter the candidates and their supporters who were seen distributing printed slips to voters and urging them to vote for their favourite candidates.Â
Sindhu Pillai, deputy commissioner of police (north), said that the police seized 19 vehicles on Friday carrying campaigning material.
Results of the elections will be declared by Saturday afternoon.
