BSP’s pachyderm might roar in Gokalpur

Since late afternoon on Wednesday when the entire national media was busy with opinion polls — making claims over the Congress, the BJP and the AAP — Choudhary Balraj, BSP candidate from Gokalpur, had a reason to smile.

‘The downtrodden people in my locality want Bahen ji’s party for their development. Last time also our party won this seat and this time also we are confident of winning the seat,’ Balraj said.

In 2008, BSP won the Gokalpur seat with 27,499 votes against BJP who had to remain content with 23,364. Surendra Kumar from BSP had contested from the seat against BJP’s Ranjeet Singh. However, this time due to differences between Surendra and party supremo Mayawati, he was denied party ticket and BSP decided to field Balraj as their ‘new dark horse’.

Surendra contested as an independent candidate. Though, he will manage to grab a share of the pie, Balraj is expected to get the larger share of it and win from the seat.

Another scheduled castes seat, Seemapuri, is awaiting an interesting result. BSP’s Santosh Kumar Jatav is expected to corner some dalit votes, which might cause a dent in Congress and BJP vote share. AAP will not be a major factor on this assembly seat.

One of the nine administrative districts of Delhi — north-east Delhi — has always witnessed a minority poll wave due to the large number of people of this community. With a literacy rate of 82.8 per cent as per 2011 census, it’s also not easy to fool the voters and the election chemistry in this season is likely to bring some bad news for the BJP. In 2008, BJP won four seats including Burari, Ghonda, Babarpur and Karawal Nagar. But this time the party is expected to lose Babarpur seat.

Voters alleged that BJP’s Naresh Gaur hardly visited their area after he won in 2008. New entrant Zakir Khan of Congress has emerged as a strong contender. Eighteen months back Zakir won the municipal poll by defeating BJP candidate and the wave is still in his favour.

According to a survey in Timarpur, Rohtas Nagar, Seelampur, Mustafabad, the Congress party is expected to emerge as a winner. At Seelampur, Mateen Ahmed of Congress is a clear favourite irrespective of the party he contests from. ‘If he will contest from BJP then he will win and if will contest as an independent candidate then also he will win. It’s the Mateen factor here,’ Islam Ahmed, one of the party supporters said.
