The Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party [BSP] on Wednesdaydeferred a decision on whether to withdraw support to the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance [UPA] government at the Centre. The party, however, announced an agitation against the ‘anti-people policies’ of the Manmohan Singh government through dharnas and road blocks.
‘The BSP National Executive and Parliamentary Board, which held a meeting on Wednesday, have jointly authorised me to take a final decision on the withdrawal of support which I will take soon,’ party President Mayawati told a crowded luncheon press conference here.
She, however, minced no words in expressing disenchantment with the UPA government.
The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister also reiterated her political assessment that the Lok Sabha polls might take place any time and asserted that her party was prepared for it. ‘My party will do well to balance power at the Centre,’ she explained.
Mayawati also did not specify whether the decision she was likely to take ‘soon’ would be in favour of the UPA or not. ‘I will take the decision after contemplating all aspects,’ she asserted.
She made it clear that the BSP National Executive at its meeting on Tuesday night and the Parliamentary Party, at its meeting meeting on Wednesday, decided to authorise her to take a decision about withdrawal of support.
The BSP supremo at a party rally in the state capital on Tuesday had lambasted the UPA government for adopting ‘anti-people policies’ and held it responsible for the current spiraling inflation and wave of corruption.
Her stiff gesture at the rally had left many speculating that she might withdraw support to the UPA.
She said that her party workers had been directed to go to the people and tell them about the misdeeds of the Congress-led government at the Centre. ‘They will launch an agitation through dharnas, demonstrations, small and big meetings,’ she informed.
WILL THEY WON’T THEY: MAYA’S UPA PLAN
