Brothers held for drugging cab drivers, stealing taxis

Two brothers, who allegedly used to steal hired taxies by drugging their drivers, have been arrested, police said on Thursday.

Madan Lal Arora and his brother Ashok were arrested after police found that one of the vehciles stolen by them was running in Mangolpuri area. A raid was conducted at Avantika Enclave in Mangolpuri and the stolen vehicle was recovered from Madan, said P Karunakaran, DCP, North West District.

Police recovered from them five stolen vehicles, six mobile phones and 30 tablets of medicines used for drugging taxi drivers. The duo were active in North West, West and South Delhi localities.

According to police, a man had approached owner of Jaswinder Tour and Taxi Services in Pitampura on 16 September to hire a taxi for going to Punjabi Bagh.

Taxi-stand owner Jaswinder Singh had himself gone with him but was later found unconscious in an intoxicated condition near Central School, Pitampura, while his car was found missing. He remained unconscious for three days. He told police that he was given cold drink by the passenger and after drinking it he became unconscious.

Police said the brothers were working as travel operators using the vehicles with fake number plates and on fake documents.

Madal Lal, 52, told the police that he got the idea from news reports of people being drugged in trains and decided to get into the act. They hired hired a taxi from R K Puram area and administered the drug to the taxi driver and ran away with the taxi.

Following the success in their first attempt, they decided to steal more cars and used to get fake papers of the stolen vehicles prepared from someone.

Madan and Ashok are residents of Avantika Enclave in Rohini.
