Bringing backstage to the fore

Entering its 19th year, the Chaman Lal Memorial Award, constituted to recognize artists for  the stage lighting and design is a unique endeavour in the field of theatre. It turns the spotlight on the innumerable unsung heroes that smoothen the on stage presence of theatre artists without ever getting visibly acknowledged. The awards conferred by the SoTciety will be given out this year by Minister of Culture, Chandresh Kumari Katoch on 5 May at Siri Fort.

The awards that honored the likes of Alyque Padamsee, Bansi Kaul, M.S. Sathyu, Ebrahim Alkazi, Sushma Seth, Zohra Sehgal and many other prominent theatre personalities all over India, will continue the tradition in the 19th edition. This time around,the highlights include Rudraprasad Sengupta from Kolkata for life-long Achievement to the theatre world, Ms Kriti V Sharma from Haryana for Excellence in Costume Designing and Sh. Dinesh Poddar from Kolkata for excellence in Stage Light Design.

The award ceremony will be followed by a 40 minute multimedia presentation, Ek Shaam that will bring alive the magic of the stage for the audience. The concept and direction of the show is conceived by R.K. Dhingra.
