Ahead of this week’s BRICS summit in Goa, Chinese official media on Thursday called on member countries to agree on Beijing’s proposal to make the bloc a free trade area and initiate measures to liberalise trade.
“Observers have focused their eyes on New Delhi and have one question in mind: How much courage will it take for the trade ministers from BRICS countries gathering there on Thursday for the summit meeting to promote greater cooperation” an article in the state-run Global Times said. “It seems China is willing to open up its domestic markets to the other four member countries, but they haven’t yet made quite the same commitment,” it said. China recently mooted the idea of setting up a free trade area among BRICS countries, it said.
